The colossal statue of the David replaces the original one that in 1527 was hit from a stone launched through the merlons of the tower, from the defenders of Palazzo Vecchio. The broken pieces of the left arm were replaced by command of Cosimo in 1557, but in 1873 the statue was removed from the public square and transferred to the Galleria dell'Accademia. The current copy was placed there in 1911.
